Pages or Numbers or Keynote Documents Won’t Open In Mavericks?

You’ve downloaded Mavericks and you’ve also downloaded all the free updates for apps like Numbers, Pages, and Keynote.

But, when you click on an existing document, say in Numbers, you get a message that says you can’t open it until you install version 3.0 of the software. So you say, “well, I already did that.” Yes, admit it, you talk back to your computer.

You did, but none of the traditional methods of opening your document works. Fortunately, there is a simple solution. Check out your Dock and see if the new icons for the apps are in place.

If they are not, then your computer is confused about which version should be used. Simply drag each of the old icons from the Dock and release. There will be a poof and they will be gone.

Then go into your Applications Folder (File > New Finder Window > Applications) and drag the icon for each app to the Dock and release. Now your Dock will reflect the correct version of the software and you should be able to open your existing document in one of the usual ways (drag it across the icon on the Dock, or double click it).

You may also choose to then go back into your Applications folder and remove the previous versions of the apps. You will probably find them in a single folder called iWork. You don’t have to do that and shouldn’t do it if you think you might need to use one of the older versions. I deleted them and have had no problems after doing so.

This little problem could be fixed with future releases, but if you are like me, you can’t wait for that.

    I did this and got Pages to work. But since then I can’t even launch any of the products, either from the Dock or the Apps folder??

      Hi Pip,

      I don’t want to get into the business of diagnosing problems from afar, aside from the fact that I could mess things up for you. If I were having this problem I would probably delete the new apps and reinstall them after I discarded the older versions of the apps, but my recommendation is that you contact Apple support at 1-800-275-2273.
