OK, so here is the picture. You are a new Mac user (or trying to help a new Mac user). There is a problem, like maybe the computer won’t start up. There are a few basic things you need to know. What kind of Mac do you have? What OS are you running? When was it purchased? Do you have Apple Care? What’s the serial number?
And you are saying, “IT WON’T START, SO HOW DO I KNOW”
Protect yourself. Visit this URL: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2471
You will find a form that Apple has put together for you that lets you gather all the important information in one place. You can prepare the form and then put it away somewhere safe and have it when you need it.
A lot of what you need you can find by clicking on the Apple menu > About This Mac. You will find the Processor and Memory information in that window. Then you can click on the “More Info” button and find the rest.
